Periodontal disease (AKA Periodontitis) is an advanced form of gingivitis. Characteristics of periodontitis include: inflammation of the gums and bone loss. An increasing layer of plaque forms and hardens (calculus) in pockets between the teeth and the gum. Bacteria infect these areas causing inflammation and with time the inflammation and infection may lead to loss of the supporting structures of the teeth (bone and gingiva).
